The Sun Lakes Boulevard Extension project would close a gap in the City’s circulation system by connecting the current end point of Sun Lakes Boulevard at Highland Home Road and extend the roadway 1 mile easterly to connect at the intersection of Sunset Ave and Westward Ave. Competing this roadway segment will provide numerous benefits to the City of Banning, including;
- Creating a through roadway south of Interstate 10 and the UPRR, where no other surface street option exists
- Providing traffic relief for residents in the Sun Lakes Community to access Interstate 10 from Sunset Ave, rather than Highland Springs Ave
- Improving emergency access to the Sun Lake Community and the Sun Lakes Village Shopping Center.
- Improving evacuation routes from the Sun Lakes Community with the connection to Sunset Ave, and eliminating dependance on Highland Springs Ave
- Improving transit routing options with vehicles avoiding crossing through the Interstate 10/Highland Springs interchange
The roadway will be constructed to the ultimate configuration, with 2 travel lanes in each direction, Class 2 bike lanes, sidewalks, and medians. Landscaping would be completed as a separate project.
The project design was funded through Wester Riverside Council of Governments TUMF program. Construction funding is a combination of funds from Riverside County Transportation Measure A Regional Arterials program, TUMF Program, and City DIF funds.
